Iranian President Orders Security Forces to Show Restraint

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has ordered security forces to exercise restraint during protests over the economic situation. The order came on the 11th day of demonstrations, with the aim of distinguishing between peaceful protesters and armed “rioters.” According to Vice President Mohammad Jafar Ghaemabadi, President Pezeshkian ordered that no security measures be taken against the protesters, but that armed “rioters” be dealt with. This move appears to be an attempt to de-escalate tensions and avoid further casualties. However, security forces have already killed at least 27 protesters, including five minors, according to the Iran Human Rights (IHR) NGO. Iranian media report 13 deaths, including members of the security forces. Meanwhile, Iranian General Amir Hatami warned that Tehran will not tolerate external threats and that Iran’s response will be more forceful than during the war with Israel in June. The protests began on December 28th with a strike by merchants and have spread to many cities.
