ISOTITA Responds to Fytiris' 'Consequences' Warning: 'We Will Not Obey Orders of Silence'

The Pan-Cypriot Union ISOTITA responded to statements made by the Minister of Justice and Public Order, Kostas Fytiris, regarding potential "consequences" for the actions of its members. The union accuses the Minister of attempting to "admonish" representatives of the Police Force and Prison Officers, threatening them with sanctions if their actions are deemed "outside the rules". ISOTITA emphasizes that its members are public servants who perform their duties and that criticism and control are constitutional rights of trade unionists, not a matter of obeying "orders of silence". The union disagrees with the Minister's definition of discipline, which it considers oversimplified and contrary to the obligations of public officials. It points out that hierarchy is respected during the performance of duty, but when union representatives speak publicly, they act as equal social partners and not as subordinates. ISOTITA calls on the Minister to confine himself to his role as administrator and not to attempt to define the framework for trade union action. It stresses that the role of the union is to control the employer, highlight problems and defend the rights of its members. Finally, the union states that it is willing to cooperate, but will not succumb to "orders of silence". It reiterates that legality is on its side and that any attempt at intimidation will fail.
