Israel Deploys Iron Beam, the World's First Operational Laser Air Defense System

Israel has officially presented and delivered the Iron Beam, the world's first operational laser air defense system, to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, the system is designed to intercept rockets, mortars, and drones at short ranges and will be integrated into Israel's existing air defense network (Iron Dome, David’s Sling, Arrow). The Iron Beam has demonstrated its effectiveness in extensive trials, successfully intercepting various aerial threats. Its key feature is the combination of a powerful laser source with advanced electro-optical tracking and adaptive optics, enabling precise interceptions at a low cost – approximately the cost of electricity compared to thousands of dollars per conventional missile launch. Israel's Defense Minister, Israel Katz, hailed the delivery as a historic milestone, emphasizing that the Iron Beam fundamentally changes the threat calculation and sends a strong deterrent message to Israel's adversaries. The system is expected to significantly enhance Israel's ability to counter mass rocket and drone attacks. The deployment of the Iron Beam marks a significant advancement in air defense technology, moving the concept of laser use from the experimental stage to operational reality. Its low cost per interception makes it an attractive solution for protecting against inexpensive, yet massive threats.
