Spain Will Not Allow Its Military Bases to Be Used for Attacks on Iran

Spain will not allow its military bases to be used for attacks on Iran, Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares stated following the start of US-Israeli strikes. Fifteen American aircraft have already departed from the Rota and Morón bases in Spain, with several heading to Germany. Spain's stance, which has condemned the attacks, differs from other countries like Britain, which initially refused but ultimately approved the use of its bases for “collective self-defense.” Albares emphasized that Spanish bases will not be used for operations not agreed upon with the US or that do not comply with the UN Charter. The departing aircraft were primarily refueling planes. Spain’s decision could further strain relations with Washington, given the strong criticism leveled by socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez against US-Israeli actions. The Spanish government seeks to maintain a neutral stance and ensure the country is not involved in military operations without its approval.
