Japan: Death Toll from Heavy Snow Reaches 46

The recent snowfalls in Japan have claimed the lives of 46 people and injured 558 in less than a month. The continuous snowfalls, which began on January 20th, have caused chaos on the roads, particularly in the area of the Sea of Japan. In Aomori Prefecture, the snow depth reaches 1.3 meters. Many accidents are due to snow piles falling from roofs or people falling while trying to clear them. The government has deployed troops to assist residents of Aomori Prefecture, where the snow in some areas reaches 4.5 meters.
