Japan: Takaitchi Pledges to Proceed with 'Significant Policy Change'

Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaitchi has stated that the Japanese people desire a 'significant policy change' after her party, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), won a two-thirds majority in recent parliamentary elections. Takaitchi, the first female prime minister of Japan, had called snap elections after the ruling party held a slim majority in the lower house. The LDP won approximately 316 of the 465 seats, and with its allied party, is expected to reach 352, giving Takaitchi a strong mandate to implement her agenda. Takaitchi acknowledged the 'very heavy responsibility' to make Japan stronger and more prosperous. The victory comes at a time of tension in the Asia-Pacific region, as Takaitchi has suggested that Tokyo could intervene militarily in the event of a Chinese attack on Taiwan. China responded by stating that it would give a 'decisive response' to any 'irresponsible and reckless' action by Japan. Takaitchi, however, has stated she is open to dialogue with China, emphasizing that it will be conducted in a 'coordinated and appropriate manner'. At the same time, she stressed the protection of Japan’s peace, security, and territorial waters. This dynamic has raised concerns in the markets about Japan’s economic policy. Takaitchi has already adopted a recovery plan worth 110 billion euros and pledged to exempt food from the 8% consumption tax in an effort to limit the impact of inflation. Additionally, she reaffirmed the strong alliance with the US, stating that she will discuss the unbreakable unity between the two countries with President Trump.
