Katsuta Drives Toyota to Another Triumphant Victory at Safari Rally

Takamoto Katsuta made history at the Safari Rally in Kenya, winning his first career victory in the World Rally Championship. Together with co-driver Aaron Johnston, the Japanese driver drove the Toyota GR Yaris Rally1 to the top, while maintaining TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team's undefeated streak in the legendary African race. This victory makes Katsuta only the second Japanese driver to win a WRC race after Kenjiro Shinozuka, and also the second Japanese to win the Safari Rally, after Yoshio Fujimoto in 1995. The Safari Rally is considered one of the most demanding races in the world championship. Despite the difficulties, Katsuta has proven to have a special relationship with the race, having already three podium appearances from his previous five participations. However, the 2024 event didn't start ideally for the Japanese driver. On Friday, he faced a double tire puncture that dropped him to seventh place overall, almost two minutes behind the leader. However, Katsuta did not give up. He chose a strategy of steady driving, avoiding mistakes on the extremely difficult special stages on Saturday. The tactic paid off, as several of his main rivals faced problems on the muddy and rocky routes. Katsuta gradually climbed the standings and reached the top before the midday service on Saturday. By the end of the day, he had created a lead of over one minute over Adrien Fourmaux of Hyundai Motorsport. On Sunday, the Toyota driver calmly managed his lead in the last four special stages and reached the victory with a difference of 27.4 seconds.
