Kombos: Ankara has to choose 'whether to persist in its self-exclusion'

Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos stated in an interview with "O Fileleftheros" that the Republic of Cyprus does not exclude Turkey, but that Ankara has the option to continue its "self-exclusion". Mr. Kombos emphasized the strengthening of Cyprus's international presence and the expansion of its collaborations, particularly with countries in the Middle East and the Gulf, in anticipation of Cyprus's Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2026. The Foreign Minister mentioned that Cyprus's foreign policy aims at systematically expanding its diplomatic footprint, leveraging its comparative advantages, such as its geographical location and its membership in the EU. Cyprus seeks to play a role of stability in the region, without hesitation and with a clear direction. Specifically, Cyprus has concluded action plans for structured dialogue with countries such as India, the United Kingdom, France, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Kenya, Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Greece. At the same time, it identifies and cultivates relations with other countries, such as Ethiopia, Tanzania, the Central Asian countries, and the Gulf countries. Mr. Kombos underlined that Cyprus approaches international relations with realism, based on common interests and geopolitical data, and not on illusions of friendship. Strengthening Cyprus's presence in the Middle East and the Gulf is considered a strategic choice, due to the stable relations and great prospects offered by the region.
