Leading 'Los Lobos' Cartel Member Arrested in Mexico

A leading member of the Ecuadorian criminal organization 'Los Lobos' was arrested at the international airport in Mexico City. Ángel Esteban Aguilar, also known as 'Lobo Menor,' was wanted with an Interpol 'red notice' for crimes such as drug trafficking, extortion and murder. The arrest was made after coordinated efforts by Ecuadorian and Mexican authorities. Aguilar is allegedly involved in the murder of Ecuadorian presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio in 2023. According to authorities, Aguilar had obtained false documents and was planning to flee to Mexico. His arrest is a significant success in the fight against organized crime in the region. Mexican authorities announced the arrest via the X platform, while Ecuadorian Interior Minister John Ripeberg confirmed the identity of the suspect and his connection to the murder of Villavicencio. Cooperation between the two countries is considered critical to tackling cross-border criminal organizations.
