Life from Death: 44-Year-Old Brain-Dead Man Donates Liver and Two Kidneys

A 44-year-old man, who had been hospitalized for six days with an intracranial hemorrhage in the ICU of the 'Agios Dimitrios' hospital in Thessaloniki, was declared brain dead and his family consented to donate his organs. The surgical team from the 'Hippokrateio' hospital proceeded to harvest the liver and both kidneys, which will be transplanted into three patients on the waiting list. The first liver transplant was performed on a 50-year-old recipient, while the kidney transplants are expected to follow after compatibility testing. The Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis, congratulated the family and medical staff for their act of solidarity and prompt response. The organ donation provided hope to people in critical condition who were waiting for a transplant to continue their lives.
