Limassol: New Infrastructure to Ease Traffic Congestion

Traffic congestion in Limassol is worsening, with approximately 13,000 new vehicles added each year. The Ministry of Transport has announced the construction of the Northern Limassol Bypass, with the first two phases to be tendered by the end of 2026. Smaller projects are also planned to improve connectivity on the north side of the city and alleviate traffic on highway junctions, aiming for safer and easier commutes. The viability of the Limassol tram system remains under evaluation. A previous study concluded that the project was not financially viable due to low population density, with a re-examination scheduled for 2035. The Ministry has requested an update to the study to assess whether new data can make the project viable. The decision to construct the tram will be based on the results of the new study, which will examine the economic and operational viability of the project. The Ministry of Transport seeks to implement infrastructure that is resilient and financially feasible, serving the needs of citizens. The overall goal is to create a comprehensive and sustainable transportation system in Limassol, which will contribute to easing traffic congestion, improving the quality of life for residents, and protecting the environment.
