Macron: EU Should Create a Common Debt Instrument

French President Emmanuel Macron stated that the European Union should create a common debt instrument, such as Eurobonds, to challenge the hegemony of the US dollar. He argued that the EU has a lower level of borrowing compared to the US and China and that failing to utilize this capacity is a mistake. Macron also warned about trade threats and intimidation from the US and called for a "European preference" in strategic sectors against American and Chinese competition. He estimated that the EU's total investment needs amount to €1.2 trillion per year and described the Trump administration as "openly anti-European".
