Maduro's US Trial Begins: "I am Innocent, an Honest Man"

The hearing of Nicolás Maduro before US federal justice in Manhattan has begun. Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were brought in without handcuffs and pleaded not guilty to the charges against them, which include conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism, cocaine trafficking and possession of weapons. Maduro emphasized that he is the legitimate president of Venezuela, while Flores stated that she has bruises on her ribs and needs medical attention. Maduro's lawyer, Barry Pollack, left open the possibility of filing requests regarding Maduro's status as head of state and the legality of his arrest. The hearing lasted about half an hour and the next hearing was set for March 17. The judge informed Maduro of his rights, including the right to legal representation and possible release on bail, although bail has not been requested at this time. Both Maduro and Flores will receive a consular visit. The case is expected to be complex and raise significant legal issues.
