Menelaou-Daná Discuss Cyprus Talks Ahead of UN Secretary-General's Announcements

The Greek Cypriot negotiator, Menelaos Menelaou, met with the representative of the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mehmet Daná, to discuss the resumption of regular meetings following the holiday break. During the meeting, both sides conducted a general review of the situation, awaiting further instructions from the UN Secretary-General regarding the next steps in the Cyprus negotiations. The UN Secretary-General's Special Representative in Cyprus, Husein Djan, is expected to brief the UN Security Council on the 15th of the month, presenting the Secretary-General's new reports on his Good Offices for Cyprus and UNFICYP. On January 29th, the Security Council will vote on renewing the mandate of UNFICYP for another year. The Menelaou-Daná meeting signifies an effort to maintain dialogue between the two communities, despite the lack of significant progress in the negotiations.
