Minimum Wage Deemed Insufficient in Cyprus

The Christodoulides government is facing criticism over the minimum wage level, which has been set below 60% of the median wage, as recommended by the European Directive. Furthermore, the failure to implement a commitment to an hourly minimum wage creates inequalities between workers with different schedules. AKEL believes that the set amount of 979 euros (with an increase to 1,088 euros after 6 months) is insufficient to cover basic needs in Cyprus in 2026 and is calling for a review of the decision. The trade unions PEO, SEK and DEOK have requested a meeting with the President of the Republic to discuss the issue, expressing their concerns about the impact on workers.
