Mitsotakis: Cyprus Mission is Defensive and Peaceful

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis briefed Parliament on the situation in the Middle East and the preventative measures being taken by Greece. He emphasized that Cyprus is in a more vulnerable position than Greece and announced the dispatch of the frigate 'Kimon' to the island, as a contribution to deterring threatening actions. Mr. Mitsotakis stressed that Greece's presence in Cyprus is defensive in nature and aims to protect the Republic of Cyprus. He expressed the need for political composure and called on parties to set aside their differences in the face of critical developments. The government is considering preventative measures for the economy, as fuel prices are expected to rise due to the crisis. If necessary, interventions will be taken to limit price increases. At the same time, the Ministry of Citizen Protection has been put on high alert for potential Israeli targets, and relevant services for possible migration pressures. Finally, the Prime Minister referred to the repatriation plan for Greeks in the Gulf region, which will be activated as soon as airspace opens. He described the developments in Iran and the Middle East as “dramatic” and reiterated Greece’s support for de-escalation, diplomacy and International Law.
