Mobile Phone Ban in Schools Tightens: From Recommendations to Penalties

Published January 7, 2026, 12:28

The Minister of Education, Athena Michaelidou, spoke about the implementation of the mobile phone ban in Cypriot schools. The ban has been in effect since October 2024, with the current school year focusing on the transition from recommendations to penalties. The Minister emphasized that mobile phone use in the classroom limits students' potential and negatively affects their mental health. The ban is complete in primary education. Schools have the flexibility to implement different practices, such as storing phones in lockers or a complete ban during school hours. The circular allows the use of mobile phones only under the supervision of the teacher and for educational purposes or in emergencies.
