Municipalities Reject New Landfill Tax, Citing Burden on Households

The Union of Municipalities of Cyprus is strongly reacting to the government's intention to impose a landfill tax, warning of a significant burden on households. Municipalities argue that the cost will inevitably be passed on to citizens and that the government is responsible for the shortcomings in waste management infrastructure. The Mayor of Amathous and head of the Union of Municipalities' waste working group, Kyriakos Xydias, stated that during a meeting on “Pay-as-you-throw”, the government announced its intention to impose the tax, citing the Recovery Fund. Municipalities do not consent to the imposition of the tax, as they believe that the government's failures should not burden citizens. Municipalities point out that the government manages the waste unit in Pentakomo, where 80% of waste is buried, while it should have ensured integrated management to bury only 20%. They warn that the imposition of the tax will lead to an increase in waste management costs and will significantly burden households. The President of the Union of Municipalities, Andreas Vyras, stated that municipalities cannot afford additional taxes and that the imposition of the tax will be disastrous for municipalities and citizens. The Union of Municipalities will discuss the issue at the Executive Committee and announce its next steps.
