Mushroom Season: What You Need to Know (VIDEO)

The collection of mushrooms in Cyprus remains a popular activity despite the risk of poisoning. The fascinating but also dangerous world of mushrooms was discussed on the Sigma TV show “Mesimeri kai Kati,” with the participation of a representative from the Forestry Department and an experienced mushroom collector. The importance of fungi in the ecosystem was highlighted, as they function as recyclers and as “messengers” of plants, transporting nutrients and warning signals. According to the data, there are approximately 1.5 million species of fungi worldwide, but only about 1,000 have been identified in Cyprus, of which only 9-10 are edible. Mushroom collecting is difficult this year due to the lack of rain, resulting in very few mushrooms. The forestry legislation in Cyprus is strict, as mushroom collection is generally prohibited, but allowed under specific conditions, such as collecting by hand and replacing the leaf litter. Violations carry fines of up to €5,000 or one year in prison. The risk of confusion between edible and poisonous species was highlighted, as many of them look very similar. Great care is advised, and the consumption of mushrooms that are not absolutely certain to be edible should be avoided. The show emphasized the need for public awareness and education regarding the risks and rules of mushroom collecting.
