New Grant Scheme for Electromobility Under Development by MOT. Vafaedis' 2025 Report

The Cypriot Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works is developing a new grant scheme to promote electromobility, which will be valid until 2030. This was announced by the Minister of Transport, Alexis Vafaedis, during a presentation of the Ministry's report for 2025. The Minister stressed that the transition to electromobility still requires state support, as the price of electric vehicles, although reduced, remains high for the average consumer. The new grant scheme will replace previous programs funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan and will provide annual grants until the end of the decade, within the framework of Cyprus' obligations under the National Energy and Climate Plan. In 2025, approximately 2,500 electromobility grants were awarded, totaling 21.5 million euros. Minister Vafaedis stated that the goal is to have approximately 85,000 electric vehicles circulating in Cyprus by 2030. However, he admitted that achieving this goal depends on international developments in the car market and prices. It is estimated that if around 15,000 electric vehicles are registered annually for the next four years, the target will be achievable. Additionally, the Minister noted the growing interest in hybrid vehicles in Cyprus, emphasizing that the Ministry's policy focuses on reducing emissions and not exclusively on increasing the number of electric cars. The presentation of the report also covered issues such as major road projects, ports, airports and public transport, with emphasis on faster transport, green transition, better infrastructure and better citizen service.
