New Prison Plans in Cyprus: Locations Under Consideration and Union Demands

The Minister of Justice, Kostas Fytiris, announced the construction of new Central Prisons, which has been met with a positive response from prison officers. However, they are demanding specific timelines and guarantees for the project's implementation. While the Minister mentioned a location outside the urban area, information suggests that the final selection has not yet been made. The locations under consideration are Kokkinotrimithia (near the 'Pournara' Reception Center - most likely), Kotsiatis – Marki, Analiontas, and Kofinou. The procedures are still in the initial stages, including architectural designs and bidding, with approval expected from the Council of Ministers. The prison officers, through the ISOTITA union, express their satisfaction with the attention being given to the problems of the prisons, but emphasize the need for concrete actions and not just announcements. They highlight the need for experts and technicians during construction to ensure proper operation and living conditions. At the same time, the Personnel Branch of Prisons of PASYDY welcomes the Minister's announcements. The government is being called upon to ensure the continuation of the project by subsequent governments, so that there are no setbacks.
