New Threats Against Journalists in the Occupied Territories

The Turkish Cypriot Journalists' Union (KTGB) condemns a recent incident of threats and obstruction of journalists' work in the occupied territories. The incident occurred after a trial in Kyrenia, where a relative of the defendant threatened three journalists – from the newspapers Diyalog and Ahbap and the channel Genç TV – who were trying to capture images, saying “You will see what awaits you.” The journalists filed a complaint with the “police”. The KTGB recalls that similar incidents have occurred in the past, despite calls for greater sensitivity from the “authorities”. The union expresses its concern over the continuing threat to journalists. The obstruction of journalists in the performance of their duties is considered by the KTGB as a direct attack on freedom of the press and expression, as well as the public's right to information. The union emphasizes that journalists do not represent specific sides, but have a responsibility to convey the truth to the public. Attempts to silence them through threats and pressure are described as “absolutely unacceptable”.
