New Wave of Food Price Increases Hits Greece with 7,500 Code Hikes

A new wave of food price increases is hitting the Greek market, with over 7,500 product codes already seeing price increases in the first ten weeks of 2026. This wave adds to previous increases at the end of 2025, where price increases were identified in over 11,500 codes. The increases are not limited to specific categories, but extend to a wide range of basic items, such as dairy products, meats, eggs, baby food and more. This intensifies concerns about the direction of prices on the shelf and the purchasing power of consumers. The government has imposed a cap on profit margins on 61 categories of supermarket products and liquid fuels, with intensified controls by the Independent Authority for the Control of the Market and the Protection of the Consumer. Strict fines and publication of offenders are provided for violations. Food inflation has accelerated, reaching 5.2% in February, with significant increases in products such as beef, coffee, chocolate and fruit. This situation causes additional concern, as food accounts for a significant portion of Greek household spending.
