Nicosia's Stormwater Systems Need Unified Planning

The recent heavy rainfall in Nicosia highlighted significant deficiencies in the stormwater systems that were handed over to the Nicosia Sewerage and Water Council (NSWC) in July 2024. The main problem is the lack of a unified network, as existing networks are fragmented across municipal boundaries, old, incomplete, and poorly constructed. The creation of a unified plan, as has been done with water and sewage networks, is considered essential for effective stormwater management and reducing the risk of flooding. The NSWC has allocated €1.6 million in its 2026 budget for repairs and improvements to existing systems. However, a comprehensive plan and the construction of a new network will require significant borrowing and the imposition of stormwater fees. At the same time, the organization is seeking state funding for major flood prevention projects, such as retention ponds, repairs to the Kotsirka River, and projects in various areas of Nicosia. Given the weaknesses of the network, the NSWC is carrying out proactive drain cleaning, especially in areas with chronic problems. Early preparation and systematic maintenance are considered crucial for reducing the risk of flooding until the major flood prevention projects are completed.
