“No Excuses”: AKEL Launches Fierce Attack on Government over Organized Crime

AKEL is launching a fierce attack on the government, accusing it of the complete audacity of organized crime, following the recent incidents in Larnaca. The party emphasizes that the government lacks the will, ability, or plan to tackle the underworld, despite the legal tools at its disposal. The incidents in Larnaca involved a turf war for control of protection money for businesses. A criminal group of Arab origin allegedly demanded money from a businessman, threatening him when he refused. On Saturday, the group attacked the businessman, who retaliated with his son and friends. Police have arrested a 48-year-old Cypriot with a serious criminal record, who is allegedly leading the group. The investigation reveals that the group had gained access to nightclubs through threats, selling protection for a specific fee. In addition, police are investigating whether the same group is responsible for the brutal assault on another businessman in the Pyla area, one day before the incidents in Larnaca. The situation has caused great concern in society and demands for immediate action.
