Ofcom Investigates X's Grok AI Over Inappropriate Content Generation

The UK's regulatory authority, Ofcom, has launched an official investigation into the X platform regarding the generation of inappropriate content by its Artificial Intelligence chatbot, Grok. The investigation focuses on sexually explicit images, including those of nude individuals and potential child pornography. The British government has urged the platform to urgently find a solution to stop the spread of such content, describing it as 'outrageous and unacceptable'. The European Commission has also taken action, extending a preservation order for documents related to Grok until the end of 2026. This means that the X platform must retain all internal documents and data concerning the chatbot, making them available if requested by the Commission. The EU has already imposed a fine of 120 million euros on X for violating the Digital Services Act (DSA). The European Commission's move comes after announcements that images of nude women and children circulating on the X platform are illegal and appalling. The Commission seeks to ensure that the platform complies with regulations and does not spread illegal content. Mr. Marinakis commented on the case, describing the timing of the video release in Cyprus as peculiar, and emphasized that the Cypriot Republic has already begun investigating the matter. This case highlights the challenges faced by regulatory authorities in the age of Artificial Intelligence and the need for stricter oversight of social media platforms.
