Organized Crime Surge in Cyprus: A Complex Challenge

Published February 10, 2026, 12:36

Organized crime is flourishing in Cyprus, according to Justice Minister Konstantinos Fytiris, who stated the need to remove “rotten apples.” Criminologist Christoforos Christoforou emphasized that there is no easy solution to the problem, nor does it focus solely on police or government structures, but is a collective challenge. Criminals exploit the procedures and rules that the state must follow. Mr. Christoforou referred to the “grey areas” of Cyprus, such as the green line, as points that facilitate criminal activity. Furthermore, he stressed that corruption is not a Cypriot phenomenon but exists in all countries, police, courts, prisons. He emphasized the need for political will and an action plan to combat organized crime, as well as a change in mindset and culture in prevention.
