Outbreaks in Geri and Idalia Were Possible, Measures Still Effective, Says Veterinary Association President

The President of the Pan-Cypriot Veterinary Association, Dr. Dimitris Epameinondas, described the detection of foot-and-mouth disease cases in units in Geri and Idalia as an unfortunate event, but stressed that it was within the possible scenarios. He clarified that this does not mean that the measures taken are not effective. Mr. Epameinondas stated that the Veterinary Association is committed to the vaccination plan set by the Veterinary Services, with the aim of achieving a high level of immunity in sheep, goats, and cattle. The spread to Geri and Idalia was possible, but does not indicate a failure of the measures. A surveillance zone has been implemented, covering approximately 45% of the country's livestock farming, but this does not mean that 45% of the animals will be slaughtered. The Association is proceeding with vaccinations, aiming to complete them by the end of March. So far, 80% of cattle and 45% of sheep and goats have been vaccinated. The Association advises everyone to follow the instructions of the Veterinary Services to address the situation.
