Over 300,000 'Perpetual Students' Removed from Greek University Rolls

The first phase of the process to clear student rolls at Greek Higher Education Institutions has been completed, resulting in the removal of 308,605 inactive students who had been admitted before 2017. Education Minister Sofia Zacharaki stated that detailed figures for those who took advantage of the second opportunity offered will be published soon. Ms. Zacharaki emphasized that student status cannot be for life and that this process aims to upgrade the value of degrees and enhance the quality of studies. Furthermore, she stressed that the ministry seeks a modern and inclusive university that supports students. Deputy Education Minister Nikos Papaioannou described the clearing as a necessary step towards rationalizing the academic system, allowing universities to better plan their needs.
