Partial Restoration of Athens FIR: Flights Resume Gradually

Published January 4, 2026, 11:17

A partial restoration has begun at the Athens FIR following a technical issue, allowing for the resumption of some landings and departures. However, the flight schedule will not be fully implemented immediately, but gradually. The technical contractor and the National Telecommunications Committee continue to investigate the problem. The issue caused significant flight delays and cancellations at Athens Airport, with 8 aircraft returning to their parking positions, 3 being diverted to other airports, and 4 being canceled altogether. A total of 75 flights were delayed. To alleviate congestion, flights to the north, east, and south are permitted every 4 minutes. The situation at Athens International Airport 'Eleftherios Venizelos' is chaotic, with overcrowding and uncertainty for passengers.
