Peace Council or Power Council? Concerns Raised Over Trump's Initiative for Cyprus

US President Donald Trump's invitation to specific countries, including Cyprus, to participate in a 'Peace Council' for Gaza has sparked international concern, particularly due to reports suggesting a financial contribution requirement for participation. Former Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis warns that this initiative is not limited to Gaza but aims to establish a new international organization that could compete with or replace the UN. According to Ms. Marcoullis, the financial aspect of the plan, with countries contributing over one billion dollars securing preferential participation, distorts the principle of equal state participation and strengthens the influence of economically powerful nations. Cyprus, which bases its international standing on international law and the UN, could risk its national interests, especially regarding the Cyprus issue, by participating in such a scheme. Ms. Marcoullis urges President Christodoulides to publicize the letter he received from Trump and clarify Cyprus's position on this initiative.
