Phytiris Announces: “Space Has Already Been Found Outside the Urban Fabric for the Construction of a New, Modern Prison”

Minister of Justice and Public Order Kostas Phytiris announced a series of measures to address problems in the prison system during a visit to the Central Prisons. The measures include the announcement of 90 new prison guard positions with mandatory prior training, the upgrading and reopening of the Prison Guard School, the announcement of a position for Director of the Central Prisons, and the identification of a location outside the urban area for the construction of a new, modern prison facility. The expansion of the existing Central Prison has been suspended. Mr. Phytiris emphasized the importance of the Prison Guard Corps for the success of the prison system and the need for humane living conditions for prisoners. He stressed that a successful prison facility is one that helps prisoners return to society as functional citizens. The Minister's visit was the fourth to the Central Prisons in less than a month, highlighting the importance he attaches to the issue. During the visit, a modest ceremony for the cutting of the staff's New Year's cake was held.
