POGO: Farewell to George Vassiliou – His Legacy in Social Progress and Women's Rights

The Women's Movement POGO expresses its deep sorrow over the loss of George Vassiliou, the third President of the Republic of Cyprus. Vassiliou is recognized for his political integrity, rationality, and commitment to social progress. During his presidency, Cyprus made significant strides in democratization and institutional upgrading, with an emphasis on meritocracy and social development. Particular mention is made of the founding of the University of Cyprus and the charting of the country's European course. A key milestone of his administration was the creation of the Women's Rights Office, which served as a precursor to the current National Mechanism for Women's Rights. This initiative led to significant legislative changes, such as the modernization of family law, and policies supporting the family and working women. George Vassiliou was the son of Fofo Vassiliou, an iconic figure in the Cypriot women's movement. Fofo Vassiliou was a pioneer in the establishment of the first Movement of Working Women and played a crucial role in the fight for women's rights, particularly during the miners' strikes. In 2017, POGO honored Fofo Vassiliou with the 1st Women's Contribution Award “Kleio Christodoulidou and Katina Nikolaou,” and her son, George Vassiliou, received the award, highlighting the enduring importance of his mother's contribution. POGO extends its sincere condolences to his wife, family, and loved ones.
