Police Unions Expect Discussion on Work Schedules in Parliament in January

Police unions expect a discussion on the issue of new work schedules in the Parliamentary Legal Committee in January, following contacts with committee members. The issue arose after the issuance of a circular by the Chief of Police. Simultaneously, a meeting of the Joint Personnel Committee of the Police (MEPA) is also expected to examine the matter. The Police Association of Cyprus (POAC) is awaiting the MEPA meeting, which will determine the Association's next steps. The Equality union has already called for a protest rally outside the Parliament on the day of the Legal Committee meeting, stating that it is ready to take action if the implementation of the circular is not suspended. Equality insists that the change in work schedules constitutes an infringement of staff rights and demands the immediate suspension of the circular's implementation. POAC, for its part, calls on the Chief of Police for dialogue, emphasizing that the situation could have been avoided with timely consultation. POAC expects the MEPA to convene within the week, with representatives from the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Finance, POAC, and the Senior Police Officers Association participating. The Committee serves as a means of consultation on issues affecting police personnel, and POAC hopes for a positive outcome.
