Poppy Abraham Honored with Honorary Doctorate: 'True Culture is Linked to Empathy'

The University of Cyprus awarded actress Poppy Abraham an Honorary Doctorate from the School of Humanities in a special ceremony. In her acceptance speech, titled 'From Theatre to Empathy,' Poppy Abraham emphasized the role of theatre as a space for thought, reflection, and social awareness, describing it as a 'nourishment for the soul' that sows seeds of knowledge and questioning. The actress referred to the responsibility of culture and intellectuals to resist indifference and intolerance, questioning the impact of a world without questioning and critical thinking. She stressed that true culture is linked to empathy, justice, and human solidarity, and that artists have a role to contribute to a more open and humane society. University President Tasos Christofides and Dean of the School of Humanities, Michalis N. Michael, presented the work and personality of Poppy Abraham, highlighting her contribution to the promotion of universal values, bi-communal cooperation, and peace through theatre. They referred to the joint performance of 'Lysistrata' with the Turkish Cypriot Municipal Theatre of Nicosia as an example of mutual understanding and resistance to nationalism. The ceremony concluded with the reading of the resolution and the investiture of Poppy Abraham with the University of Cyprus's hood, as recognition of her long artistic career and her contribution to Cypriot society and culture.
