Possible Outbreak of Infections. Makarios Hospital on Alert

The Pediatric Clinic of Makarios Hospital is recording an increase in cases of seasonal infections, such as influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Dr. Elena Papamichael, Director of the Clinic, stated that the situation is under control, as the clinic is not overcrowded, but warned of a possible further increase in the coming days due to seasonality. Currently, one child is hospitalized with RSV and four children are recovering from influenza A and other comorbidities. No cases of coronavirus have been reported in recent days. Dr. Papamichael noted that the levels of cases are comparable to last year's period, but there is a possibility of an increase. The hospital is on full alert and the Intensive Care Units are ready to manage more serious cases, if necessary. In the event of a large influx of patients, there is cooperation with other hospitals of the OCYP in all cities. The occupancy rate of the ICU at Makarios is around two-thirds, and Dr. Papamichael expressed confidence that the hospital will be able to cope with a possible increase in cases. Finally, Dr. Papamichael addressed recommendations to parents, emphasizing the importance of avoiding gatherings, good ventilation of spaces, personal hygiene and frequent hand washing. She also pointed out that vulnerable children should be vaccinated against influenza.
