President of Cyprus: Despite Regional Crisis, Cypriot Presidency Continues its Work

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, assured from Brussels that the Cypriot Presidency continues its work as normal, despite the crisis in the neighborhood. During a press conference at the Tripartite Social Summit, the President emphasized that daily life in Cyprus has not been affected and the country remains safe and stable. He highlighted Cyprus' dual role as a member of the EU but also a country in the Mediterranean and the Middle East, clarifying that Cyprus is not part of the crisis, but is facing an isolated incident in British bases. President Christodoulides conveyed the expectations of countries in the region from the EU for substantial involvement and a leading role in de-escalating the crisis, proposing cooperation with third countries. He expressed his satisfaction with the support Cyprus received from European countries, noting that this support gives substance to the prospect of activating Article 42.7. Furthermore, President Christodoulides addressed investors and businesses, assuring them that Cyprus remains a safe, stable and fully functional hub for businesses, investments and tourism. This statement comes at a time of increased uncertainty in the region, aiming to reassure stakeholders and ensure the continuation of economic activity. For his part, the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, described the situation in the Middle East as "particularly worrying," pointing out that Cyprus has already been targeted by a proxy of Iran, which highlights the enormous risk involved in the crisis.
