President of Cyprus: We Assume the EU Presidency at a Time of Profound Change

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, stated that Cyprus is assuming the Presidency of the Council of the European Union at a time of profound change and geopolitical turmoil. He emphasized that the decisions made now will shape the future of the EU, and that the Cypriot Presidency has a clear vision: a Europe that is strong, stable, and secure, but also autonomous and open to the world. President Christodoulides stressed the need to strengthen the EU's autonomy, as well as its defense and security, including maritime security and the management of migration. He also expressed Cyprus's unwavering support for Ukraine, for upholding international law, its territorial integrity, and its sovereignty. Regarding the economy, President Christodoulides referred to the promotion of simplification of procedures, the reduction of bureaucracy, and the support of small and medium-sized enterprises and innovation. He also emphasized the importance of deepening relations with transatlantic partners and strengthening cooperation with the southern neighborhood and the Gulf. Finally, President Christodoulides underlined the need for an enlarged EU, as well as the promotion of social cohesion, with an emphasis on affordable housing and the protection of children online. He stated that Cyprus will work towards a balanced and long-term budget that will ensure a more secure and resilient Union, capable of leading on a global scale.
