Rain Offers Relief, But Dams Remain at Critically Low Levels in Cyprus

Recent rainfall in Cyprus, accounting for 43% of the expected January precipitation, has provided some relief from the drought, but dams remain at critically low levels. The overall dam capacity stands at 10.2%, compared to 26.6% during the same period last year. The Kouris dam, the largest in Cyprus, is particularly concerning, with a capacity of only 9.5%. Other dams in critical condition include Vizakia (0.2%), Germasogeia (1.2%), and Achna (1.8%). In contrast, the Kalopanagiotis dam shows relatively good capacity (84.8%). The situation by water system is as follows: Southern Conveyor (10.2%), Paphos (9.4%), Chrysochous (12.2%), and Lefkosia (10.2%). All systems show a significant decrease compared to last year. January is shaping up to be the best month of the hydrological year, with inflows of 3.389 million cubic meters of water into the dams. However, inflows from previous months were very low, confirming the severity of the drought.
