The Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, stated that Cyprus begins its Presidency of the Council of the EU with the aim of acting as a 'bridge' between member states, institutions, and Europe with the wider region. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, she emphasized that Cyprus assumes the Presidency with 'immense pride and a deep sense of responsibility', despite its small size, bringing a 'great European soul' at a critical time for Europe. Ms. Raouna mentioned that Cyprus' geostrategic position, at the crossroads of three continents, makes it a meeting point of peoples and cultures, as well as a 'beacon of the EU in the Eastern Mediterranean'. The Cypriot Presidency will be based on dialogue, cooperation, mutual respect, and bridge-building. The Deputy Minister stressed that the start of the Presidency through culture was a conscious choice, as 'culture is our common language'. She welcomed the guests to Nicosia, describing it as the 'last divided capital of Europe' and the 'southeasternmost border of the Union', expressing her belief that 'tonight, the heart of the European Union beats stronger in Cyprus'. Ms. Raouna's speech underscored Cyprus' commitment to play an active and constructive role in the EU, promoting European values and addressing the challenges facing Europe.
