Rare Dolphin Species Found Stranded in Paphos

A rare species of dolphin, the Steno bredanensis (narrow-snouted dolphin), was found stranded and deceased in the area of the Lighthouse in Kato Paphos. This species, while globally distributed in tropical and warm waters, is rarely recorded in the Eastern Mediterranean, making this incident of particular scientific interest. The Department of Fisheries and Marine Research (DFMR) was informed about the stranding and proceeded with the necessary procedures for the management and scientific investigation of the event. Previously, the same female dolphin had been spotted alive in shallow waters but managed to return to the sea. Samples have been taken for further analysis as part of the monitoring and protection of marine mammals.
