Red Alert for Foot-and-Mouth Disease – Strict Measures at the Ceasefire Line

The Ministry of Agriculture is on red alert following reports of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreaks in a cattle unit in the occupied Lapithos. An emergency meeting is being held with all stakeholders to better coordinate preventive measures. Disinfection measures have already been taken at crossing points to and from the occupied territories, and controls by the Customs Department, the Police and the UNFICYP have been intensified to prevent the illegal trafficking of animals and animal products. Controls along the milk supply chain have also been stepped up. The authorities reassure the public that FMD is not transmitted to humans, but only affects cloven-hoofed animals. However, a potential spread of the disease could cause incalculable economic damage. Australia has removed Cyprus from the list of FMD-free countries, which has triggered intense diplomatic activity to revoke the decision, due to the impact on halloumi exports.
