Regional Reactions and Turkish Concerns over the Recognition of Somaliland

Published December 30, 2025, 07:29

Israel's decision to recognize Somaliland is causing geopolitical unrest in the Horn of Africa, with strong reactions from Somalia, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia. Somaliland is a breakaway region of Somalia that has not received international recognition to date. Israel's move has been condemned by most states in the UN, while the US maintains a differentiated stance. Meanwhile, Turkey is expressing strong concern, as it has a significant military presence in Somalia, including a military base and plans to create a ballistic missile test site and a space center. The recognition of Somaliland is linked to Israel's geostrategic confrontation with the Houthis in Yemen. Regarding the war in Ukraine, despite consultations, key issues such as the status of the Donbas and security guarantees remain open, however, there is a willingness for a peaceful solution.
