Renowned Cypriot Artist Koula Savvidou Passes Away

The prominent Cypriot artist Koula Savvidou passed away on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at the age of 69, causing grief in the art world. Born in London but raised in Limassol, her artistic journey was closely linked to her family, as she was a cousin of Nikola Oikonomou and a sister of Rebekka Savvidou. She studied at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, where she worked tirelessly to survive, taking on multiple jobs alongside her studies. Returning to Cyprus in 1981, she focused on sculpture and held her first solo exhibition in 1984. Her collaboration with the Diaspro gallery in 1987 was particularly significant, and her work gained international recognition, representing Cyprus at the Biennale of Young Artists in Barcelona in 1988. The loss of her cousin, Nikola Oikonomou, in 1993 deeply affected her, and she dedicated her 1995 exhibition to him. Savvidou returned to the forefront in 2022 with a renewed appreciation of her work.
