Reuters: MIT Asked MI6 to Help Protect al-Assad

Turkey’s intelligence service (MIT) asked its British counterpart, MI6, to take on a broader role in protecting Syrian President Ahmed al-Assad after recent assassination plots, according to sources cited by Reuters. Turkey has denied making such a request. The move underscores the efforts of Syria’s foreign allies to stabilize the country after years of civil war and the rise of Islamic State. Islamic State has declared al-Assad its “number one enemy” and has intensified its attacks. Turkey, Britain and the US have expressed support for al-Assad and have lifted most of the sanctions imposed on Syria.
