Cyprus Receives €1.18 Billion for Defense Under SAFE Initiative

The European Commission has approved the national defense plans of eight EU member states, including Cyprus, under the SAFE (Security Action for Europe) initiative. Cyprus will receive €1.18 billion to strengthen its military readiness and acquire modern defense equipment. The approval was granted during the College of Commissioners meeting in Limassol, with the first payments expected in March 2026. In total, the eight member states will have access to approximately €38 billion. The SAFE initiative is part of the broader Readiness 2030 package, which aims to mobilize up to €800 billion for defense from member states, with €150 billion earmarked for joint procurement. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that 2025 saw significant progress in the field of defense within the EU. The initiative aims to strengthen the European defense industrial base while ensuring interoperability and cost reduction. Commissioner for Defense, Andrus Kumpilius, highlighted the urgent need to strengthen European defense. The next steps include the evaluation of plans from the remaining member states, approval by the EU Council, and the signing of loan agreements.
