Scientific Committee Meets to Tackle Foot-and-Mouth Disease in Cyprus

The 7-member Scientific Advisory Committee for tackling foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus held its first meeting, appointed by the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panagiotou. The committee comprises distinguished veterinarians and scientists, including Dr. Sotiria Georgiou, Dr. Dimitris Epameinondas, Dr. Kostas A. Konstantinou, Dr. Stella Mazeri, Dr. Georgios Nikolaou, Dr. Kyriakos Spanoudis, and Dr. Dimitris Tsaltas. Dr. Georgiou has experience in laboratory diagnosis and public administration, while Dr. Epameinondas specializes in veterinary surgery and public administration, as well as experience in veterinary associations. Dr. Konstantinou is a specialist pathologist and infectious disease specialist with experience in managing infectious diseases. The committee aims to contribute to the effective management of foot-and-mouth disease by leveraging the expertise of its members. The Ministry of Agriculture announced the biographies of the members, emphasizing the value of their scientific training and experience. The establishment of the committee is part of the government's efforts to protect animal health and avoid economic consequences from the spread of foot-and-mouth disease. Collaboration between scientists and relevant authorities is expected to play a crucial role in addressing the crisis.
