Serious Weaknesses in Quarry Management Revealed by Audit Office Report

A new report by the Audit Office reveals serious weaknesses in the management of quarries in Cyprus. The report, which is a continuation of a 2019 audit, finds that basic problems still exist, despite a six-year time gap. Significant delays are observed in the licensing processes, with only 14 out of 29 applications for quarry development submitted between 2020-2023 having been completed. At the same time, gaps are identified in the implementation of European and national frameworks, delays in promoting strategic policies, and serious environmental issues, particularly in the Akamas area. The report also highlights weaknesses in the management of guarantees and the collection of quarry rights. The Audit Office emphasizes the need for the utilization of natural resources with legality, transparency, and strict protection of the environment and biodiversity. The report highlights the need to simplify licensing procedures, comply with European obligations, and address environmental risks, especially in the Akamas area, where the proposed new quarry zone threatens protected species.
