Setback in Mental Health: Community Structures Returning to Athlassa Hospital

Serious reactions are being caused by a recent decision of the Directorate of Mental Health Services to transfer community mental health and addiction structures to Athlassa Hospital and to merge community mental health nursing sectors. The Pan-Cypriot Nurses Union (PASYNO) and the Pan-Cypriot Union of Government Doctors (PASYKI) denounce the decisions as arbitrary and without consultation, warning of serious consequences for patients and healthcare professionals. They believe that these actions lead to a deterioration of mental health services and a return to outdated, institutional care models. Criticism focuses on the lack of adequate staffing at Athlassa Hospital, which makes it difficult to operate existing structures effectively, let alone integrate new ones. The unions argue that the process should have followed the existing Statutory Charter and been done after the filling of the Metropolitan Throne. The decision has caused concern and protests from clergy and citizens.
