Severe Floods in Spain, At Least One Dead

Severe floods hit southern Spain over the weekend, resulting in at least one death and the disappearance of two people. Torrential rains caused flooding in numerous towns, with images circulating on social media. Rescue services are working to clear flooded roads and address the consequences. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez urged citizens to remain highly vigilant. The Spanish national meteorological agency (Aemet) lowered the alert level in Andalusia, but heavy rainfall continued along the coasts of Valencia and Murcia. These floods come at a time when Spain is still grappling with the aftermath of the major floods of October 2024, which caused more than 230 deaths, mainly in the Valencia region. The recurrence of extreme weather events highlights the need for better preparedness and risk management. The situation remains critical, with authorities continuing efforts to locate the missing and provide assistance to those affected. Damage to infrastructure and disruption to the normal functioning of settlements pose significant challenges in addressing the crisis.
